1 What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God (Romans 4).
Have you ever tried to impress a cat? It’s pointless even to try. They live in their own universe and you’re not in it. Well, trying in our flesh to impress the God who created our universe and everything in it (as well as outside of it) is even more pointless than trying to impress a cat. Doing the greatest deed we can ever do — apart from God’s righteousness in us through Christ — just will not impress God at all. We have nothing to boast about before God.
The only work that has ever truly impressed God and kept His attention, is the Cross of Christ. Indeed, God the Father remains mesmerized (I speak as if insane) by the wounds on His Son — the spotless, righteous Lamb of God who did the unspeakable for the unworthy. To think that any deed we do on our own can impress Him and distract Him enough to cause Him to take His eyes off the deed of His Son … well, that is pure vanity and nonsense. No work of ours is considered good unless it is founded in and issues from that ultimate work of Jesus. And in those works we boast in Jesus, not in ourselves.
Lord, may all our works This Day be pleasing to You and impress You, because they have their source in Him. Amen.
