The Pierced Groom

34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.  35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe (John 19).

You will notice the break from Romans.  That’s because as I was just becoming conscious and waking up this morning, the Lord gave me some spiritual insight.  I love it when God does this!  Anyway, some of you will have already thought of this, but it all became clear to me just now — so bear with me and rejoice in the truth you already knew.

Why the pierced side?  The spear added nothing to His death because the Cross had already killed Him.  This is plain from the Scriptures above: the soldiers were just checking to make sure Jesus was dead, and that’s why they didn’t break His legs.  So, why the pierced side?  Here’s the spiritual reason: the first Adam was made to sleep so that a rib might be taken from his side to form his bride.  Jesus, the Second Adam, was made to sleep (die) so that His blood might be taken from His side (and all His wounds really) to form His Bride, the Church.

Lord, thank You for the pierced side of Jesus!  Thank You for making us a part of your blessed Bride!  Help us This Day, as Your Bride, to walk in purity and devotion to You, our Blessed Groom.  Amen.
