3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us (Romans 5).
As I read these verses I am reminded of the bitter “tribulations” I experienced last year, and the “perseverance” the Lord was working in me. I remember how it was with much “hope” that I was expecting a change in my circumstances that would both pronounce the end of my long wait for another ministry, as well as acknowledge the fact of at least a small measure of “proven character” had been worked in me.
All of us have been through great “tribulations” which seem to take us to the very limit of spiritual endurance. Through them all we were able to remain confident that the much greater hope of continued fellowship with Christ would not be “disappointed.” Why? Because God’s love is being poured out in our hearts through His Holy Spirit who was given to us, and who abides with us and in us.
Lord, fill us with your Holy Spirit This Day, that we might abound in the hope of our calling in You through Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
