7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5).
In verse 2 Paul writes about us “standing in our faith;” here he writes about God “standing beside (“demonstrates”) His own love.” Because God stands with His unconditional, agape-love, in faith we can stand before Him. And God stood with His love — by having His Son hang on a cross. Jesus hung on the Cross for sinners who could never stand before God.
This is the grace of God in a nutshell — the unmerited, undeserved favor of God — “that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” This is why we can and should never get over what God has done for us. This is why the Cross of Christ should never grow old in our hearts, and never become mundane in our thinking. This is why, anytime our eyes fall upon its symbol, we should always give pause in wonder of the love and grace shown to us.
Lord, help us This Day to walk in such a way that shows we are still astounded by the Cross. Amen.
