1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2 May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it (Romans 6)?
I remember a joke about a guy who was hitting his thumb with a hammer. When asked why in the world he was doing such a dumb thing, he replied he did it because it felt so good when he stopped. Pretty dumb. Well, it’s no less dumb to continue on in sinning in order to have grace make you feel good. It just doesn’t work that way — May it never be!
This is the fourth time in Romans Paul uses these words, trying to express the utter repugnancy of such a thought. It is disgustingly offensive to think a follower of Christ would purposefully sin in order to receive more grace. True believers just don’t do this! It is walking in darkness instead of walking in the light (Ephesians 5:8).
Lord, help us to walk in the light This Day, abhorring any form of sin and darkness that would seek to invade our lives. Yet, still, thank You for Your abounding grace when we stumble. Amen.
