We Were There

3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death (Romans 6)?

Our being “baptized into Christ” is a fulfillment of the promise Jesus gave in Mark 10:39 — “The cup that I drink you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized.”

The old hymn beautifully captures this idea:

Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble … tremble … tremble.

Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

The hymn is a plea for sinners to make sure they have truly been “baptized into Christ” and that their sins have been placed on Christ and thus crucified with Him.  What a wonderful question to ask someone: Were you indeed there?

Thank You, Lord, for baptizing us into Christ Jesus!  Thank You that we were there with Jesus and drank the bitter cup He drank.  Help us This Day to walk humbly before You and men — as simple sinners who by Your grace alone have been to the cross with Jesus.  Amen.
