Resting, Not Presuming

15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be (Romans 6)!

Currently there’s a commercial running on TV with a little diddy: “Should I stay or should I go?”  Now, as I read this, the same little tune comes to my head, but with its words: “Shall I sin because of grace?”  In verse one the question was concerning gaining more grace by sinning, while here it is about gaining permission to sin because of grace.  It’s like thinking, “Oh, it’s O.K. to fall into sin because I know I’ll be forgiven.”  It’s another dumb question, yet with the same blazing answer.

To sin because we know we will be forgiven is like a spoiled child stealing the car keys and sneaking out to go on a midnight ride before having a license — because he knows his parents would never refuse him the car once he has one.  What kind of a child would act like that?  Not a very good one.

Lord, help us This Day to be good children, who, while certainly resting under Your grace, still, never take it for granted — and certainly never presume to take advantage of it.  Amen.
