No Cowboy

14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. (Romans 5).

I grew up watching Cowboys and Indians.  My heroes were Roy Rogers and The Lone Ranger (Clayton Moore) and The Rifleman (Chuck Connors) and McClintock, Rooster Coburn, and Will Andersen (John Wayne).  These were all men who in a pinch could “shoot from the hip” — meaning they were quick on the draw in reaction to a threat.  Well, God is not a Cosmic Cowboy who shoots good from the hip.  This is because He never needs to react to anything, because everything that happens is already according to His sovereign plan.

The word “type” here means “a figure formed by an impression made with a strike or blow.”  Our word “prototype” comes from this.  In other words, even at the creation of Adam (as a “type”), God was already thinking of the Incarnation of Jesus, “just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world …” (Ephesians 1:4).

Lord, we are so grateful we do not serve a God who sits in the heavens, wringing His hands and shooting from the hip in reaction to all that is happening down here on earth.  You know the remedy for all our ills even before they show any symptoms.  Help us to walk This Day in full and thus calm assurance of Your sovereign rule in our lives.  Amen.
