2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death (Romans 8).
Imagine a dungeon, dug so deep, making it so dank and dark, that you shiver in the cold and shrink back in the blackness. Your bones rattle inside trying to keep warm, and your eyes bulge outside trying to see. And nothing is there to help — not even the thinnest sheet, nor slightest crack. Then there are the shackles to deal with, as they constantly bite and gnaw at ankles, where skin is raw and sores are festering. Then there are the rats, ever so vigilant, always watching and waiting to add their own gnawing to your misery. The only food you might have is the rats themselves, who are trying to eat you — and yet you are too slow and weak even to catch them. And there you sit, languishing alone in agony and despair — with no comfort and no hope.
Now imagine the ceiling suddenly bursting upward, allowing warm light to flood into the cavern, even as your shackles break apart and you are gingerly lifted up and out and gently set by quiet streams in the warm sun with a banquet set before you and a host of others joining you, whose smiles and loving arms tell you they have shared the same experience, and you are safe with them. You have all been set free.
Lord, thank You for setting us “free from the law of sin and death!” Help us This Day to walk in liberty and to help our brothers and sisters in Christ to walk in liberty, while also being Your instruments of setting others free. Amen.
