23 And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body (Romans 8).
First fruits means just what it says: the initial harvest of a crop. The “first fruits of the Spirit” are therefore the initial harvest of the spiritual crop sown in the heart of a person. And what is that fruit? A “groaning within” for final “adoption” and “the redemption of our body.” That is, when someone is born again, the first fruit issuing forth is a longing for more — it is a spiritual addiction.
We usually look at addiction as being a bad thing, and yet here we see that every earthly addiction is just a counterfeit to the one, real addiction that is indispensable — an addiction to two things: a growing relationship with God as His adopted child, and the increasing freedom from sinning against our bodies. We want to know and serve God better and better and better.
Lord, thank You for this spiritual addiction you have caused to work within us! Thank You that we truly want to know and serve you better each day. May our love and service to you This Day be better than it was yesterday. Amen.
