28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren (Romans 8).
We’ve all heard of the idiom, “putting the cart before the horse,” describing what it means to get ahead of ourselves in doing something. Well, whenever we read verse 28 without also reading verse 29, it’s like “putting the cart … without … the horse.” Like a horse pulling a cart, so does verse 29 pull verse 28.
Our predestination to be conformed to the image of Jesus, is what pulls the circumstances of our lives along toward good. Indeed, the good in verse 28 is the conformity to Christ in verse 29, and for us there simply is no greater good than that. The only greater good is the glory of God, which He causes all things to move toward.
Lord, thank You for this amazing good you are working in our lives! We want to be more like Jesus today, so help us This Day to trust that you are working every circumstance we meet today toward that end. Amen.
