31 What then shall we say to these things? … 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ” (Romans 8)?
“So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate” (Matthew 19:6). These are the words of Jesus, and quoted at every wedding I officiate. It is a final and solemn warning both to the couple to be vigilant in keeping their marriage vows, as well as to anyone else in the room who might do anything to ruin their marriage.
The word “separate” here in Romans is the same word used in this warning of Jesus — and yet here it is no warning at all. No, here we see it as a statement of fact, clothed as a rhetorical question. The fact is, nothing will separate us from the love of Christ. Nothing. The fact is, He will never divorce us, nor will He allow anyone else to come in and break off His relationship with us. Though our love for Him may fail, His love and commitment to us never will. He always remains the faithful Groom, no matter how many times we become His unfaithful Bride.
Lord, thank You for Your abiding faithfulness to us, even when we are unfaithful to You. Help us This Day to walk with You as Your loving and faithful Bride. Amen.
