9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him (Romans 8).
The tell-tale sign of the new birth in Christ is the Spirit of Christ dwelling within. No Spirit, no true conversion. We “belong to Him” precisely because His Spirit has stamped His signature on our very souls (Ephesians 1:13).
Interesting how ownership is defined and initiated by a gift. We belong to Him because His Spirit (which He has given) belongs to us. Now there is a gift — with strings attached! Most of the time we would categorically reject any such a gift from someone, would we not? Ah, but in this case, it is the most wonderful gift imaginable, and we gladly exchange all rights to ourselves for this most precious gift.
Lord, on This Day we give You thanks for this most precious gift of the Spirit of Christ living within us. And we thank You for the strings attached — strings that are strong cords forever binding us to You and to one another. Amen.
