1 Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion … (Philippians 2).
“Encouragement,” “consolation,” “fellowship,” “affection,” “compassion” — five descriptions of Christian conduct within the body of Christ. What these five words are describing is nothing less than a supernatural experience of the Spirit of God working among us, as we come alongside one another in a mutual effort to express to one another heartfelt and persuasive words of encouragement, understanding, and love. There is nothing else like it in the entire world.
This should be the standard practice of every Christian gathering, but alas, it is not always so. Much of our problem is, we think it will just automatically happen whenever we come together, but the truth is, it is a choice that must repeatedly be made. For, unfortunately, there is just no such thing as a Christian Cruise Control.
Lord, thank You for the body of Christ, and for the wonderful opportunity we have to express to one another heartfelt and persuasive words of encouragement, understanding, and love. Should that opportunity arise This Day, help us to be ready to take fullest advantage of it. Amen.
