A Responsibility and a Promise

9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you (Philippians 4).

We have all “learned” truth in many ways, whether we have “received” it, “heard” it, or “seen” it.  And yet, regardless of how we have obtained it, there is always but one thing to do with it — and that is to “practice” it.  This is our personal responsibility, and we can neither give it to another, nor assume theirs.

Yet we will not be alone in our endeavor to fulfill that responsibility.  For the promise is that “the God of Peace will be with” us to help us.  I used to think God would never ask us to do anything we weren’t able to do.  I understand things differently now.  The truth is, the Bible is full of examples showing how that’s pretty much all He asks of us.  He asks us to live like His Son, and yet we can never even begin to live the least bit like Him — without His help.  We are told here to practice the truth we learn, but without the God of peace helping us, we would fail every time.

Thank You, Lord, for being with us to help us practice what we are learning about You and Your ways.  Help us This Day to practice well.  Amen.
