4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! 5 Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near (Philippians 4).
A question God used to pierce my heart just hours before my conversion was simply, “Are you happy?” If there is one thing an unhappy soul needs, it’s a happy one coming alongside and gently leading them to the One who made their soul happy, and who is always near as the only One who can make another soul happy. Joy and gentleness are like two peas in a pod. They really go well together, especially in evangelism. For few things are more attractive to a soul on the verge of conversion (in turmoil and wooed by God), than a joyful and gentle spirit.
There are a thousand and one things in this world that makes a soul unhappy, but they are nothing compared to the unhappiness caused by the sad state of lostness already within that soul. In the same way, the soul that is made happy through salvation carries a happiness that a thousand unhappy things from the world cannot quench.
Lord, we thank You that we are happy, and we thank You for those happy and gentle souls You sent our way to help woo us to You. Send us all out This Day to minister to the lost and unhappy souls around us. Amen.
