12 Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; 13 but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3).
Christ “laid hold” of us so that we would “lay hold” of Him. This is “the goal” and “the prize” and “the upward call of God” because it is all about being “in Christ Jesus” Himself. This is what we “press on toward,” the “one thing” we must do. Yet, anything and everything else will try to crowd this out. We can pursue right knowledge and good morals and religious observance, but if we are not pursuing Jesus Christ Himself, we end up crossing the wrong finish line, the real goal being missed, with an inferior prize being won.
And we keep pressing on, because this side of heaven we can just never get enough of this Groom whose “banner over [us] is love” (Song of Solomon 2:4). We are always satisfied with what we find, and yet we know there is always even more of Him to find. He has so profoundly laid hold of us, that we press on, hoping to lay hold more and more of Him.
Lord, thank You for laying hold of us! Help us to press on This Day, laying aside everything else that would crowd You out, so that we might lay hold of more of You. Amen.
