22 … for there is no distinction; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God … (Romans 3).
All means all. Simple, for there is no distinction — Yes, Every. Single. Last. One. Of. Us. The failure is of mass, epidemic proportions — the disease of sin from which not a single person can escape.
Short of means … well … how short? Answer: more than a gezillion, million miles short. The imagery is of an arrow flung from a bow that doesn’t even hit the target at all. It doesn’t fly past the target — that would be bad enough. No, it doesn’t even make it to the target. It falls short — embarrassingly short — hitting the ground in front of it. And not, just in front of it. No, the arrow dribbles off the bow! Total Fail. Total Shame.
The glory of God means everything. The target for every created being always has been, always is, and always will be: the glory of God. We can hit the Bull’s Eye on every other target we aim at, but if we miss this target — if we miss the glory of God — well, then we have missed everything.
Lord, thank You that Jesus did not fall short of the glory of God! Thank You that He hit its Bull’s Eye every second of His sinless life. Thank You that He Himself is the glory of God (John 1:14)! Help us This Day by the power of His Holy Spirit living in us, to shoot straight and true, as we aim for Your glory. May our arrows find their way at least somewhere on that target. Amen.
