38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8).
This word “convinced” can also be translated “persuaded,” signifying the entrance of an outside source. We can be convinced of something within ourselves, but we cannot be persuaded in the same way. No, we must be persuaded by someone else — an outside source. And, of course, the One doing the persuading of all spiritual truth is none other than the Holy Spirit of Christ who lives within us.
Concerning spiritual truth, not a single one of us “figures it out” on our own. If we could, then we would have something to boast in, and of course, there is no boasting — no room for strutting around with thumbs in our armpits, looking down on others because we figured it out and they didn’t. No! No! A thousand times, No! We would never know anything of God without His kind intentions toward us. Never! It is all of grace!
Lord, thank You for convincing us of all biblical truth by Your gracious and Providential persuasion through the Holy Spirit. Continue to persuade and convince us This Day both to understand as well as to follow Your graciously revealed truth. Amen.
