Guarding the Gospel

14 Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you (2 Timothy 1).

The word “guard” is the same word used to describe the shepherds “keeping watch over their flock by night” in Luke 2:8. The “treasure” they watched were animals; ours is something much more precious. For they were “entrusted” with sheep—we have been entrusted with the gospel of God.

This word “entrusted” is found only three times in the Bible, all of which are in Paul’s letters to Timothy. We have already seen the other use in this letter (1:12). In his first letter he said the same thing he says here: “guard what has been entrusted to you” (6:20). Thankfully, we have the Holy Spirit within to aid us in this charge. He who guards our souls (which have been entrusted by the Father and the Son) is able to help us guard the gospel.

Lord, Help us This Day to guard the gospel, preserving its purity and keeping a watchful eye for opportunities to share it. Amen.
