22 Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart (2 Timothy 2).
The word “with” connotes being with others, as in “along with” others. We “flee from youthful lusts” along with others, and we “pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace” along with others. Just as stray sheep are targets for wolves, so is a lone Christian a target for the evil one. We are meant to be with others “who call on the Lord from a pure heart.”
Together, we are constantly on the run—both fleeing and pursuing—away from lusts and toward the Lord. There is no in-between. And yet paradoxically, we find our rest in the running, for our Lord promised us rest (Matthew 11:28). Similar to a “runner’s high” in our fleeing and pursuing, we experience a “runner’s rest.”
Lord, help us This Day to experience that “runner’s rest” along with others. Amen.
