Hiking Instructions

16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness… (2 Timothy 3).

Imagine you have written instructions on how to hike by the best outdoorsman in the world. Then, while out on a solo trip you find yourself off the beaten path and lost, before finally finding your way back. Well, this is what this verse is all about. It’s about a training manual that we never outgrow.

It’s about God’s Word, “Scripture” (and that means“all” of it), “inspired” by the best Guide ever, the Holy Spirit Himself, who gives us “teaching” as to how to live our lives—instructions which we follow, until (due to our own fault) we find ourselves off the narrow way a bit. But that’s when God’s Word hits us over the head with “reproof,” making us aware we are off the path, and then gives us “correction” to get back on course, with also some additional “training” so that we don’t get off course again.

Lord, thank You for Your Word!  Help us This Day to read it, learn from it, and follow it, so that we can be good hikers. Amen.
