1 You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 2).
One can be strong physically, mentally, or spiritually. As a young boy I worked out diligently in order to gain weight and strength to be a better football player, yet alas, without the requisite genes my goal could not be accomplished—no matter how hard I tried. Likewise, as a college student I studied diligently in order to understand organic chemistry—yet alas, a C average was the best I could do.
The lesson is clear: No matter how hard we try, both strength and intellect may elude us. However, when it comes to being “strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus,” there is no one who cannot be assured of success—if they would only yield to Christ. Indeed, this is the greatest kind of success anyone can achieve, for goodness and virtue may elude both body builders as well as great intellects—but the very essence of godliness is virtue itself.
Lord, thank You for the grace that is in Christ Jesus! Help us This Day to pursue it with every fiber of our being. Amen.
