The Divine Formula

2 The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also (2 Timothy 2).

Here in this one verse we find the divine formula for church growth, and the fulfillment of Christ’s command to make disciples. It cannot get any simpler than this: I disciple someone, who then disciples someone, who then disciples someone—each of us moving on to yet another and another. It’s the power of multiplication over addition: 2x2x2x2x2x2x2=128, over against 1+1+1+1+1+1+1=7.

If every believer had been doing this from the beginning, the whole world would have been won to Christ long ago. And yet, our Lord is not surprised at all. For He knows unbelievers will be here until the end of time, and He also knows not every believer will use the divine formula.

Lord, again we see Your grace and mercy toward us who do not use the divine formula as we should. Help us This Day to try to practice at least some measure of spiritual addition, even if not multiplication. Amen.
