5 Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. 6 For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience, 7 and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them (Colossians 3).
“Idolatry” is not simply the worship of graven images, it is the devotion given to ourselves by trying to satisfy “the members of [our] earthly body” through “immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed.” Actually, the First Commandment does not even say anything about graven images at all (that comes with the Second Commandment). It simply says: “You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:3).
Making ourselves first in importance and captains of our own fate is the fulfillment of the devil’s temptation in the garden to “be like God” (Genesis 3:5). And just like Adam and Eve were banished from that garden for breaking the one and only commandment God gave them, all those who do the same now will also experience “the wrath of God” for breaking the First Commandment.
Lord, help us This Day to devote ourselves to You alone, and not ourselves. Amen.
