1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship (Romans 12).
My paraphrase of this verse: “So (with all this being said concerning God’s holiness, grace, power, and sovereignty), I’m coming right alongside you now, as it were, brothers and sisters, with the compassion of God Himself in my heart, to beseech you who are just standing around, to go ahead and jump in and give your very bodies themselves as a living and holy sacrifice to God, which is the only kind of sacrifice that pleases Him, and which is the only reasonable, logical, and intelligent way to serve Him.”
Up to now, Paul has spent eleven chapters writing about God’s character and plan—and now it is time for action on our part. Yes, he has written about our action of faith, and the grace of God involved even in that, but here Paul moves to real, spiritual service to God based on that spiritual faith. True, spiritual faith always results in true, spiritual service—which involves the entire person, as body, heart, and mind all jump into the fray of fighting the good fight.
Lord, we do not want to be just bystanders. Help us to put away anything that would keep us from jumping into the fray with all that we have. Help us This Day to fight the good fight. Amen.
