6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; 7 if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; 8 or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness (Romans 12).
God is a God who gives: He gave His Son, who gave His life; and He gives His Spirit, who gives spiritual gifts. And what an array of gifts they are! Here we see seven: prophecy (forth-teller), service (helper), teaching (truth-teller), exhortation (counselor), giver (financial supporter), leading (organizer), and mercy (empathizer). Where would the church be without them?
What would the church do without someone standing up to point out our blindspots? Or people doing so many things behind the scenes? Or someone explaining simply the Word of God? Or someone giving wise counsel? Or people giving money to support the Gospel enterprise? Or someone getting everyone moving in the same direction? Or those who would give others a second chance? Where would the early church have been without Peter, Timothy, Luke, Paul, Lazarus, Lydia, and John?
Lord, thank You for being a Giver, and thank You for the spiritual gifts given to Your church. This Day may You use us all, Lord, for Your glory. Amen.
