11 Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed (Romans 13).
Solomon put it as plainly as possible—“Do not love sleep” (Proverbs 20:13); Paul also put it plainly—“it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep.” In other words, “Wake up, the time is now!”
Most of us spend an entire third of our lives in bed. Now just stop and think about that for a moment—one third of our lives! God could have programmed us to need only an hour or two, but He didn’t. He programmed us for at least 7-8 full hours of sleep—7-8 out of 24. Perhaps it is to show that twice as much time as we sleep should be spent doing something for God. Perhaps it is to show how God is so unimpressed with what we do, that He just let’s us sleep a full half as much time as we are awake, and tells us we are vain to think we don’t need to sleep (Psalm 127:2). And yet, He does not want us to love sleep; He wants us to wake up and get busy. There is a time to sleep, and there is a time to wake up.
Lord, we thank you for the gift of sleep. It is humbling to think You need us so little, that You let us sleep so much. Yet, while we are awake This Day, help us to be fully awake in all our endeavors, so that You might be glorified in all that we do. Amen.
