5 Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, 6 so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 15).
Unity is the outworking of God’s work among His people to bring a common experience of “perseverance and encouragement” among them. His people are “of the same mind” because they know the same Savior who helps them persevere and who encourages them in their walk with Him. Because they all hear His voice (John 10:4), their voices unite “with one accord with one voice.”
History has repeatedly shown how the greatest growth in the Christian church has come while in the throes of government persecution and social opposition. For it is in the face of such things that believers learn to persevere, fighting a common enemy far greater than any petty non-essential issue that would divide them. Yes, the greatest missions work in a country has often occurred only after all the foreign missionaries were forced to leave. Thus, the persecution and opposition themselves became God’s gift to His church.
Lord, we acknowledge that any perseverance and encouragement we have is because You “give” it to us. Help us This Day to also see how persecution and opposition are likewise Your precious gift to us. Amen.
