5 Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, 6 so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 15).
Sports of all kinds serve a wonderful purpose, if nothing else, in their bountiful offerings of life illustrations. One such example is found in the “game-changing” influence a single play may have, affecting the very outcome of the sporting event: a “pick-six”, a “walk-off” home run, a buzzer-beating swish from mid-court, a perfectly placed header in overtime, and so on.
The verse before us offers a “game-changer” indeed for any life willing to embrace this one single principle: to have as its goal to “glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” That’s it. This was our Savior’s goal, and this must be ours as well—and it indeed will change our life. It will affect the habits we form, the attitudes we assume, the emotions we allow, and the people we gather around. In short, it will affect every single thing about us, period.
Lord, forgive us for falling so short of this goal—indeed for often not having it as a goal at all. Help us This Day—at least this one day—to have as our goal to glorify You in all that we do. Amen.
