13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15).
This is the only place in the entire Bible where this phrase, “the God of hope” is found. Yet, we see throughout the Scriptures evidence where hope is found only in Him. No other god extends hope like the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. No other god offers the hope of salvation like the One who gave His life for it. No other god gives hope like Jesus, who rose from the dead, conquering the enemies of hope, which are sin and death. He alone is “The God of hope.”
We can be “filled with joy and peace” precisely because we “believe” in “the God of hope” who Himself is filled with all joy and peace. To believe in someone or something is to place hope in that person or thing. Thus, we place our hope in “the God of hope,” and in so doing we find joy and peace. And, the more hope we place, the more joy and peace we find—for “the God of hope” is never lacking in either, neither is He ever unwilling to fill us with them.
Lord, we praise You for being “the God of hope” in our lives, and we confess that our only hope is in You, and in You alone. Fill us This Day with “joy and peace in believing” in Jesus. Amen.
