17 Therefore in Christ Jesus I have found reason for boasting in things pertaining to God. 18 For I will not presume to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me, resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed … (Romans 15).
True obedience to Christ always manifests itself in a double response of both “word and deed.” Those who have responded to the hearing of the gospel, will make sure others as well hear the gospel; and, those who have experienced the love of Christ from others, will desire to show that same love to others.
I think of the song I heard even as a child:
Love and marriage, love and marriage,
Go together like a horse and carriage;
Any time or weather,
You can’t have one, you can’t have one,
You can’t have one without the other.
Regardless of the inaccuracy of that little diddy, I will let it point to the truth of this double response of “word and deed” in true obedience. You really “can’t have one without the other.”
Lord, thank You for Your great kindness in leading us to the obedience of faith. Help us This Day to have full obedience to You and Your gospel—both in what we say, as well as what we do. Amen.
