7 This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, “The stone which the builders rejected, this became the very corner stone,” 8 and, “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense”; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed (1 Peter 2).
There are two kinds of stones here: the “corner stone,” which, fitted at the top middle of an arch, keeps all the stones on either side safely pressed against it so as not to fall; and then there is the “stone of stumbling,” which is just as it says—a stone over which people trip and fall to the ground. Jesus and His gospel are both one and the same: they either hold people up, or cast them down. It all depends upon how they are viewed.
In the end, all who do not embrace the Rock of Ages will be crushed by Him. All who refuse to be “disobedient to the Word” made flesh and “disobedient to the word” of his gospel—every single one of them will rightly suffer “doom” for all eternity. Two stones, take your pick.
Lord, I am so grateful that everyone in our family has embraced Jesus and His gospel as the corner stone for their lives. As we go about our lives This Day, keep us firmly held up—pressed securely against You and one another. Amen.
