32 so that I may come to you in joy by the will of God and find refreshing rest in your company. 33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen (Romans 15).
Two of the distinguishing marks of any gathering of any group of saints should be “rest” and “peace.” They go hand in hand, even as believers join hands in sweet fellowship with God and with one another. Just as there will be only rest and peace in God’s heaven, so should there be only rest and peace in God’s Church. It is a sweet glimmer of hope in a hopeless world.
The only drama ever taking place in a church should be when the gospel is preached and the Spirit of God “convicts” hearts and minds of “sin and righteousness and judgment” (John 16:8). And then, even that drama is intended only to offer sinners peace with God and rest from a man-centered, works-righteousness kind of religion. All other kinds of drama is bad drama—a drama involving spiritual outlaws with group infighting.
Lord, we thank You for the rest and peace you bring to our lives, for the hope of experiencing that perfect rest and peace in the new heavens and new earth, and then also for the taste of that rest and peace we find even now among the brethren. Help us This Day to promote that rest and peace wherever we go. Amen.
