The Good Life

10 For, “The one who desires life, to love and see good days, must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.  11 “He must turn away from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it (1 Peter 3).

I remember as a child often hearing a phrase in television commercials seeking to sell something to the public. To experience “The Good Life” one simply had to purchase this or that. Here we see that if anyone really “desires life” and wants “to love and see good days”—experiencing The Good Life: the “abundant life,” as Jesus calls it (John 10:10)—well, there are five requirements: 1) watch your tongue 2) “turn away from evil” 3) “do good” 4) “seek peace” 5) indeed, “pursue” peace.

Two negatives and three positives—don’t do two things, but do three others. In other words, doing the right thing always includes not doing the wrong. But notice also that we are not just to “seek” peace, but also to “pursue” it. In other words, doing the right thing also includes doing the right thing in the right way—that is, doing it with passion.

Lord, we thank You for The Good Life You give us when we do things Your way. Help us This Day to do what’s right and not what’s wrong, and to be passionate about it. Amen.
