2 so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God (1 Peter 4).
There are only two routes to take in our living: either “for the lusts of men,” or “for the will of God.” So much for mankind’s good intentions! We are so blind to our sin that we don’t even realize how even our best intentions can be tainted by self interest. I’m reminded of this sometimes when I slow down to let someone in my lane of traffic, and then do not get a “Thank You!” wave of the hand. You see, one of my “lusts of men” can be a desire for a pat on the back. I’m like the cat rubbing against a leg, appearing to show affection, yet really just using the leg to get a back rub.
But living for the will of God is different. It makes life all about Him instead of me. Well, something changed over 42 years ago on that day I received God’s gift of His Son. Life began a steady progression toward a greater and greater emphasis on God’s will instead of my lusts. This is the Christian life in a nutshell: no longer me, but Him.
Lord, we thank You for this saving work in our lives. Help us This Day to make life more about Your will instead of our lusts. Amen.
