14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren (James 1).
The word for “carried away” could be translated “lured” and the word “enticed” could be translated “baited”—both of which are fishing terms. The truth is, “lust” has been fishing for men long before Jesus ever told us to. It lures us away from the right path with something that appears really good—only to hook us and drag us into a net to be taken and devoured.
The only hope against temptation is the gospel. We must constantly remind ourselves of its utter sweetness and goodness, so that when something pretty and shiny and enticing comes along, the glory of the gospel outshines it and makes it seem pale by comparison.
Lord, help us This Day to be so enamored with Jesus and His gospel, that we do not become deceived by godless baits and lures. Amen.
