18 But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” 19 You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder (James 2).
There are two kinds of belief: the kind that stands saved and secure before God, and the other kind that shudders in horror before Him. The first has acted on that belief by entrusting himself to God, while the second has belied that belief by opposing Him. The first kind is fit for children of God, while the second kind is fit only for children of the devil. The first kind rejoices, while the second kind despairs.
Unregenerate man is closer to demons than he is to God, sharing the same kind of faith—that which is devoid of any sort of surrender to the King. How incomprehensible that those fallen angelic beings who have witnessed more of the power and majesty and works of God than any man, have become witnesses themselves against Him rather than for Him! In like kind, it is through faithful works that man shows the ultimate power of God through salvation.
Lord, help us This Day to show with works Your power of salvation working within us. Amen.
