Subdued

7 For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. 8 But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison (James 3).

In the Bible the word “tamed” is used only here and in the account of a demon-possessed man—that “no one was strong enough to ‘subdue’ him” (Mark 5:4). Yet, Jesus did in fact “subdue/tame” that man! And in the same way, Jesus can indeed subdue and tame our tongues. What we cannot do, He can.

The tongue cannot be subdued by man because man cannot subdue his own heart, and it is the heart which dictates to the tongue—not the other way around. It is the heart which speaks long before the tongue ever issues even a single word. Until that wonderful Word Made Flesh speaks to the heart and subdues it, the “restless evil” and “deadly poison” of the tongue will certainly continue to issue forth.

Lord Jesus, we gladly submit This Day to Your rule over us. Tame us and subdue us, that no evil or deadly word proceeds from our lips. Amen.
