8 … Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you (James 4).
The first “blessed” Jesus uttered in the Sermon on the Mount concerned “the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). Before we can be brought up, we must first be brought low. A “catharsis” (“cleansing” orspiritual “release”) needs to take place.
Faith without a spiritual catharsis leading to repentance is worthless. Walking in the joy of the Lord comes only through stepping first through the portal of misery that brings you to mourning and weeping over sin and “double-mindedness”. The Lord only exalts those who have first been humbled by a realization of sin.
Lord, thank You for bringing a spiritual catharsis into our lives. Help us This Day to humble ourselves in Your presence. Amen.
