Messy, But Clean

27 Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world (James 1).

“Our God and Father” seeks those who will “worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24), and those who worship Him with their lives do so in two ways: 1) by getting messy; and 2) by staying clean. We get messy when we get involved in the lives of people like “orphans and widows in their distress” and we stay clean by keeping ourselves “unstained by the world” while doing so.

Jesus Himself entered this messy world, plunged headlong into it, hung around messy people with messy problems and sins, and engaged them in their “messiness”—yet while doing so never Himself becoming messy. Only He could do that, and we can only do that through the power of His Spirit within us.

Lord, help us get messy This Day, but help us stay clean in the mess. Amen.
