Befitting Divine Royalty

8 If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors (James 2).

The word “royal” means “befitting a king” and is where our English word “basilica” comes from. Thus, it is befitting to our King Jesus that we, as His children, not “show partiality”—but love our neighbors as ourselves. This is simply what befits divine royalty, and we are thus bound to it.

To show partiality is a serious offense indeed! It is to deny who we are as children of God and to align ourselves instead with “transgressors” or lawbreakers who are not a part of the Kingdom of God at all. It is the prince switching places with the pauper.

Lord, help us This Day to live like the royalty we are, by loving others as ourselves—no matter who they are. Amen.
