12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty. 13 For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment (James 2).
What exactly is “the law of liberty” that we are to “speak and act” according to? It is the liberty we gain through the power of Christ that pushes us to say and do the things that are right instead of the things that are wrong. It is the liberty in Christ to show “mercy” to others—just as we have been shown mercy by Him.
Through the law of the Spirit of life (liberty) in Christ Jesus we have been set free from the law of sin and of death (Romans 8:2). And we use this liberty—not as bondslaves to sin, but as bondslaves to God (1 Peter 2:16). Oh, what sweet shackles we wear!
Lord, thank You for the sweet shackles of liberty You have put upon us! Help us This Day to be bound to those things which please You and show mercy to others. Amen.
