2 We give thanks to God always for all of you, making mention of you in our prayers; 3 constantly bearing in mind your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of our God and Father, 4 knowing, brethren beloved by God, His choice of you… (1 Thessalonians 1).
We usually think of Paul’s trifecta of faith, hope, and love as originating in his first letter to the Corinthians, yet here we find this trio at least three or four years earlier in his first letter to the Thessalonians—and with additional descriptions. Faith is associated with “work,” hope, “steadfastness,” and love, a “labor.”
These qualities within these dear people are what stir Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to think of them (every last one of them) all the time and to thank God for his love for and election of them. My, what a group of folks this must have been! What a church!
Lord, may this sweet trifecta of faith, love, and hope be displayed This Day in us. Amen.
