2 For you know what commandments we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus (1 Thessalonians 4).

Hmm … what “commandments” might those have been? “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations” (Matthew 28:20)? “Love one another” (John 13:34)? Indeed, these are just as valid today as they were when first uttered, for they are the basics that never go away. And it is always the basics that we should “excel still more” (vs. 1) in. If we ever get away from the basics, it is to our own peril that we do so.

Whenever we admonish our brothers and sisters in Christ to be disciple makers or to be loving toward one another, we can do so with all the weight and authority of Jesus Christ Himself, for they are His words and not ours. Whenever we hear someone telling us to make disciples or to love other believers, we should heed those words as if they are coming from the very lips of Christ Jesus Himself.

Lord, help us This Day to speak and hear such words as if they are coming from You—for indeed they are. Amen.
