1 Paul and Silvanus and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace (1 Thessalonians 1).
Though we don’t often speak much of him, this Silvanus (or Silas) fellow was a big deal! This Hellenistic Jew (as his name suggests) was with Paul from his second missionary journey on, taking the place of Barnabas when Paul and he split up over a disagreement about John Mark coming with them. He remained faithfully alongside Paul the entire time, experiencing the same injustices and persecutions from the Jews. And yet, we hardly ever speak or hear of this man!
During his Senate hearings, Judge Gorsuch spoke of former Justice Byron Scott, who in his day was renowned and revered by so many, and yet today is not even a memory by most. His portrait merely hangs on a basement wall along with all the rest of the justices who have gone before. It just goes to show that we should seek neither our rewards nor acclaim here on this earth.
Lord, may we be like Silvanus This Day—even though we receive neither reward nor acclaim on this earth. For we know what is in heaven counts for far more. Amen.
