9 Now as to the love of the brethren, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; 10 for indeed you do practice it toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia (1 Thessalonians 4).
This phrase “taught by God” is actually just one word in the Greek and literally means“God-taught.” Now what I find interesting is that this is the only place in all of scripture where this word is found—and yet, it is absolutely basic to our Christian experience!
If there is anything we need to be taught about—and to be God-taught about—it is how “to love one another.” We simply cannot love others without abiding in and being taught by the One who by definition is love. Others may show us a good example, but only God Himself can teach us to do it for ourselves. “God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him” (1 John 4:16).
Lord, teach us This Day to love others. Amen.
