9 … His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity, 10 but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel (2 Timothy 1).
The “appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ” made “life and immortality” also appear—while at the same time making death’s influence and power disappear forever. We do not simply have life in Christ—we have immortality in Him! Just as light utterly casts out darkness (for darkness can never creep back in and overpower light) so does the life of Christ utterly cast out (“abolish”) death.
Existing laws may indeed be weakened through the introduction of new laws—but in order to make those laws absolutely powerless, lawgivers must abolish them. Thus, such bodies are not simply law-givers— sometimes they are also law-takers. Praise God, who as the Supreme Law-Taker, forever abolished “the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:2) in our lives!
Lord, we thank You for abolishing the law of sin and death in our lives, and thus bringing life and immortality to us! Help us This Day to live with the light and life of Jesus shining through us. Amen.
