10 … the gospel … 11 for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher (2 Timothy 1).
A “preacher” preaches to lost people (Romans 10:14); a “teacher” teaches those who have been saved (1 Corinthians 12:28); and an “apostle” founds churches for them (Ephesians 2:20). Paul was all of these: founding churches of saved people he could teach, after having won them to Christ through his preaching.
This was his calling, as “appointed” by God, and thus being so compelled by God Himself, he could do no other (1 Corinthians 9:16). Paul could not distinguish between enjoying the gospel for himself, and sharing it with others. Simply stated, his whole life was simply about the gospel of Jesus Christ—and he was more than happy to do all the preaching and teaching and “apostle-ing” His Lord told him to do. For him the gospel was always the main thing.
Lord, help us This Day to keep the gospel the main thing. Amen.
