19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be embittered against them (Colossians 3).
The word for “love” here is “agape,” which of course is the unique kind of love that comes from God. Thus, husbands are to love their wives in the same way God loves us—unconditionally, steadfastly, and sacrificially. In another epistle, Paul put it this way: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her …” (Ephesians 5:25).
If there is anyone that has a right to be “embittered” against us, it is the Savior, who as the bridegroom suffers every day from a bride (His Church) who does not subject herself completely to Him. And yet, He always chooses to love us—unconditionally, steadfastly, and sacrificially.
Lord, help those who are husbands to love their wives This Day—even as Christ loves His bride. Amen.
